Centred around an actual and speculative triptych of milk teeth, adult teeth and a hypothetical third set of teeth, Klaire Doyle’s new body of work considers teeth as objects of ritual and belief. Her installation is influenced by oral history, ancient history, allegorical and fairy tales attached to human teeth. She draws from traditions of morbid anatomy and Catholic reliquaries, alongside sacred and magical sites such as stone circles, to build on the layers of mysticism about regenerative human teeth that are lost, retained, and imagined.

Klaire’s work considers the different stages, rituals and stories we attach to the human mouth, via letters of note to her dentist and an archive of collected human teeth. The project was developed through a year’s collection of sound recordings and memories from the public about losing, keeping, exchanging and remembering teeth.

The installation brings together factual understandings of milk teeth and adult teeth as we know them, alongside a hypothetical third set of teeth. This third set looks towards an unknown future, as researchers in Japan currently investigate drugs to stimulate dormant human tooth development with human clinical trials now underway.
